Chapter 18 – Entry for non-work permit employment

18.1 - How to decide what Rules apply in employment (or employment-related) cases
When a person applies to enter the UK for employment or employment-related purpose, you should decide into which of the following three categories the application falls to be considered and refer to the chapter indicated:

  • on a visit e.g. for an interview, for a business visit, or an entertainer for an audition or personal appearance, a sportsperson for a trial: see Chapter 10 on visits:
  • to take up a job for which a work permit is required: see the chapter on Work Permit employment (Chapter 17)
  • to take up a job for which a work permit is not required because there is special provision (or a concession) for entry to the UK for such employment: see the guidance in this chapter.

18.2 - Provisions for non-work permit employment
The Rules provide for a person to be granted entry to the UK for certain specified employment without the need for a work permit. There are also some (publicly acknowledged) concessions which allow entry for employment outside the Rules.
